arts advocates auckland was originally established during 1986 as arts administrators auckland. It is a voluntary association, whose executive, like its membership, is drawn from arts communities across the region, including opera, orchestra, dance, theatre, gallery and literary organisations. aaa's modest operating and research expenditure continues to be met from a mixture of private and public funding, including subscriptions and grants.
The purpose of aaa is to serve as an advocacy, communications, discussion, marketing and research medium for its members. This includes making submissions to local and central government on funding and legislative matters as well as organising debates and seminars. aaa aims to make the arts integral to the lives of everyone in the Auckland Region whilst promoting high professional standards in their presentation and management.
aaa has achieved demonstrable results for its membership in many areas of endeavour, including the co-ordination of a major submission to Parliament in 1998, which resulted in the grant of $10m for regionally significant arts initiatives (from the break up of the Auckland Regional Services Trust). This was distributed through the seven Auckland Councils, with Auckland and Manukau Cities forming the ART Trust to administer the portion entrusted to them.
Members, their guests and other interested parties have also enjoyed over forty forums, seminars, debates and discussions staged by aaa during the course of its first two decades of activity. Other more recent projects include the wide range of investigations undertaken with a view to the eventual establishment of a regional arts marketing resource body and the subsequent development of a detailed business plan for Arts About Auckland - Marketing the Arts in the Auckland Region in early 2004. This, in turn, also resulted in a review of existing Auckland region arts research data, proving the need for more Auckland specific data in future.
Since then, aaa has extended its regional arts database and continues with research into arts statistics, education, funding, marketing, cultural tourism, venues and the media on behalf of its membership. Other innovations include the establishment (in co-operation with Jasons) of an arts specific regional brochure distribution service, to be launched shortly. Meanwhile, aaa continues to stage seminars on subjects of special interest to Auckland region arts communities. More information (and links to over 100 arts organisations), is accessible on this website. An updated site is to be launched late 2006.
